Lisa has been an educator for nearly 30 years who specializes in teaching literacy skills to students of all ages, math for the elementary grades and multiplication facts to any age. She has a strong passion for helping students who struggle. She uses observational and analytical data to inform her instruction, researches highly effective methods and isn’t afraid to think outside the box. Since developing an understanding of the English language from a structured word inquiry /scientific investigative perspective, her students have better than average growth year after year (based on NWEA, MSTEP, formal and informal assessments).
Lisa teaches in the public schools as a Special Education Teacher for the past 3 decades. She has served on the Michigan Education Standards Revision Committee, working closely with literacy leaders to update the standards for literacy educators. She was a Founding Member of Decoding Dyslexia MI for 6 years and served as the State Leader for DD MI for 5 years, attending conferences nationally as well as internationally. In 2016, she opened a small business, Empower Learning Center, to meet the needs of children who have dyslexia or other learning differences and to train educators in Structured Word Inquiry literacy practices. She teaches students and trains educators around the world.
