Summary

Kim Lockhart is a Special Education teacher at an elementary French Immersion school in Kingston, Ontario.  Kim graduated from the Trent- Queen’s Concurrent Education program in 2000 before doing her Bachelor of Education degree at Queen’s University. During the Program, Kim completed two overseas teaching placements, inspiring her to later pursue a career in second language instruction. Kim completed a teaching placement in Nantes, France, taught at the Canadian International School, Singapore (CIS), and eventually went on to teach for three years at the American School Foundation of Monterrey, Mexico (ASFM), combining her two greatest passions: travel and teaching. Upon her return to Canada in 2005, Kim began to work as a French as a Second Language (FSL) teacher in the Limestone District School Board. She has taught Kindergarten through to Grade 6 and runs a Special Education class. In 2015, Kim went back to Queen’s University to pursue a Master of Education degree, focusing her research on evidence-based practices that support students with reading disabilities in French Immersion programs.  In lieu of a thesis, Kim chose to create a practical resource that would be beneficial to her school community. She developed and published a handbook for parents/caregivers of children struggling to read in French Immersion: French Immersion for All.

Kim continues her journey to learn about evidence-based reading instruction. In 2019, she took her Orton-Gillingham, Classroom Teacher Training, and then the Associate level training in 2020. In the classroom, she adapts a Structured Literacy approach to meet the needs of her struggling readers in an FSL program. Kim loves to share her knowledge and experiences with other educators and works as a Literacy Coach for the International Dyslexia Association of Ontario’s “Introduction to Structured Literacy” course, gives guest webinars and workshops for the Learning Disabilities Association of Kingston, Ontario, the Modern Languages Association, and Canadian Association of Second Language Teachers. As part of her community outreach, Kim has recently launched a Science of Reading Book Club for other educators in her school board in hopes of inspiring them to learn about the Science of Reading and power of a Structured Literacy approach to reading instruction. When Kim is not teaching or volunteering, she loves to curl up with a good book, hit the trails for a hike or cross-country ski, and spend as much time as possible with her supportive husband and two daughters.
