Kelly is the Co-founder and Chair of Dyslexia Mid North Coast NSW (DMNC).
DMNC is a community of proactive parents and professionals who advocate for children with dyslexia. Our focus is to increase awareness, share evidence based information and provide support to parents and students on issues involving dyslexia and specific learning difficulties.
ACHIEVEMENTS
Dyslexia Mid North Coast has:
- Established an effective local parent support group, 2015.
- Established the 'Reading is Rocket Science Project' to upskill local teachers through scholarship funding, 2016.
- Established local diagnostic and evidence-based intervention pathways to support parents and students seeking diagnosis and intervention, 2018.
- Established local Youth Ambassador Program, 2018.
- Delivered Effective Reading Instruction workshop series for pre-service teachers at Charles Sturt University Port Macquarie, 2018/2019.
- Meet with Local and State Ministers for Education, principals and allied health professionals to advocate for evidence based best practices in NSW.
- Submission to the Senate Inquiry Disability in Education, June 2015.
- Submitted white paper 'Advancing Education for Students with Dyslexia in our Region' to Hon. Leslie Williams M.P, which was presented to NSW Legislative Assembly on 9 May 2017.
- Partnered with Luminosity Youth Summit to bring dyslexic sailor Jessica Watson to present in Port Macquarie to inspire our youth.
- Conduct regular dyslexia workshops and events for parents, teachers and allied health professionals.
- Partnered with SPELD NSW to deliver local teacher and parent workshops.
- Raised awareness for dyslexia through annual Dyslexia Awareness Month campaigns.
- Successfully advocated for the Year 1 Phonics Check, launching a national campaign and petition in 2017 that gained over 5,000 signatures.
- Presented at Sharing Best Practice Conference, Sydney 2019.
